How to Read the Psalms

SATURDAY – Introduction

The Psalms are like a big prayer and songbook that people, both Jewish and Christian, have used for a really long time. Even though people wrote them, the ideas and inspiration came from God. Just like the rest of the Bible, God is speaking to us through the Psalms. Jesus and the people who wrote the New Testament talked about the Psalms, calling them God's words too – Mark 12:10
KJV 10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: CEV 10 You surely know that the Scriptures say, ‘The stone the builders tossed aside is now the most important stone of all.
John 10:34-35
KJV 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? 35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; CEV 34 Jesus replied: In your Scriptures doesn't God say, “You are gods”? 35 You can't argue with the Scriptures, and God spoke to those people and called them gods.
John 13:18
KJV 18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. CEV 18 I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But what the Scriptures say must come true. And they say, “The man who ate with me has turned against me!”
2 Peter 1:21
KJV 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. CEV 21 The prophets did not think these things up on their own, but they were guided by the Spirit of God.

The Psalms are poems written by different people in ancient Israel, so they reflect their world, but the messages are for everyone across time. To really get what the Psalms are saying, we need to think about their poetry, history, theology, and how they were used in worship.

SUNDAY – The Psalms in Ancient Israel’s Worship

The Psalms were used in both private and group worship. They were like songs sung in the temple, and some even had notes about the instruments and tunes. The Psalms were a big part of Israel’s worship, used in ceremonies, festivals, and daily prayers – 1 Chronicles 16:7
KJV 7 Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren. CEV (Psalms 105.
1-15; 96.
1-13; 106.
1,47,48) 7 That same day, David instructed Asaph and his relatives for the first time to sing these praises to the Lord:
Nehemiah 12:8
KJV 8 Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, which was over the thanksgiving, he and his brethren. CEV 8 The Levites who returned were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah. They and their assistants were responsible for the songs of praise,
Psalm 18:1

Psalm 92:1
KJV 1 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High: CEV (A psalm and a song for the Sabbath.) 1 It is wonderful to be grateful and to sing your praises, Lord Most High!
Psalm 95:2

KJV 2 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. CEV 2 Sing praises to the Lord! Tell about his miracles.
Colossians 3:16
KJV 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. CEV 16 Let the message about Christ completely fill your lives, while you use all your wisdom to teach and instruct each other. With thankful hearts, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
James 5:13
KJV 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. CEV 13 If you are having trouble, you should pray. And if you are feeling good, you should sing praises.

Even though we don't worship in a temple today, we can still use the Psalms in our own worship, whether we're alone or with others. They help us connect with God.

MONDAY – Meet the Psalmists

King David was a key figure in organizing Israel’s worship, and many Psalms are linked to him. Other musicians and leaders in the temple, like Asaph, the sons of Korah, and Solomon, also wrote Psalms. Even Moses wrote one!

Reading Psalms helps us understand the experiences and feelings of the people who wrote them. They express joy, sadness, troubles, and praise, just like we do today. The Psalms show us that even faithful people faced tough times but found hope and comfort in God – Psalm 25:1-5
KJV 1 Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. 2 O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. 3 Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. 4 Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. CEV (By David.) 1 I offer you my heart, Lord God, 2 and I trust you. Don't make me ashamed or let enemies defeat me. 3 Don't disappoint any of your worshipers, but disappoint all deceitful liars. 4 Show me your paths and teach me to follow; 5 guide me by your truth and instruct me. You keep me safe, and I always trust you.

TUESDAY – A Song for Every Season

The Psalms cover all aspects of life, expressing joy, thanks, sadness, and seeking guidance. They're like a playlist for every situation! Some focus on God's power, others on giving thanks, and some are about learning from the past. The Psalms are like a mirror reflecting our own experiences.

The Psalms use special poetic techniques like parallelism, imagery, merism, and wordplays. These make the Psalms powerful and beautiful, even if some things get lost in translation – Psalm 3
KJV 1 Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. 2 Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. 3 But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. 4 I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. 5 I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me. 6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. 7 Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. 8 Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah. CEV (Written by David when he was running from his son Absalom.) 1 I have a lot of enemies, Lord. Many fight against 2 me and say, “God won't rescue you!” 3 But you are my shield, and you give me victory and great honor. 4 I pray to you, and you answer from your sacred hill. 5 I sleep and wake up refreshed because you, Lord, protect me. 6 Ten thousand enemies attack from every side, but I am not afraid. 7 Come and save me, Lord God! Break my enemies' jaws and shatter their teeth, 8 because you protect and bless your people. 3 Title : 2 S 15.
13 — 17.

Psalm 33:1-3
KJV 1 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. 2 Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. 3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. CEV 1 You are the Lord's people. Obey him and celebrate! He deserves your praise. 2 Praise the Lord with harps! Use harps with ten strings to make music for him. 3 Sing a new song. Shout! Play beautiful music.
Psalm 109:6-15
KJV 6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. 7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. 8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office. 9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. 10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. 11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour. 12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. 13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. 14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the Lord; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. 15 Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. CEV 6 My enemies said, “Find some worthless fools to accuse him of a crime. 7 Try him and find him guilty! Consider his prayers a lie. 8 Cut his life short and let someone else have his job. 9 Make orphans of his children and a widow of his wife; 10 make his children beg for food and live in the slums. 11 “Let the people he owes take everything he owns. Give it all to strangers. 12 Don't let anyone be kind to him or have pity on the children he leaves behind. 13 Bring an end to his family, and from now on let him be a forgotten man. 14 “Don't let the Lord forgive the sins of his parents and his ancestors. 15 Don't let the Lord forget the sins of his family, or let anyone remember his family ever lived.

WEDNESDAY – Inspired Prayers

The Psalms are more than just poetry; they're prayers inspired by God. They show a real connection between people and God, filled with emotions, requests, and praises. The Psalms are a way for us to talk to God just like the psalmists did.

Even Jesus quoted Psalms in his teachings. The Psalms are a guide for us to express our thoughts and feelings to God, especially when we don't know what to say – 2 Samuel 23:1-2
KJV 1 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, 2 The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. CEV 1 These are the last words of David the son of Jesse. The God of Jacob chose David and made him a great king. The Mighty God of Israel loved him. When God told him to speak, David said: 2 The Spirit of the Lord has told me what to say.
Romans 8:26-27
KJV 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. CEV 26 In certain ways we are weak, but the Spirit is here to help us. For example, when we don't know what to pray for, the Spirit prays for us in ways that cannot be put into words. 27 All of our thoughts are known to God. He can understand what is in the mind of the Spirit, as the Spirit prays for God's people.
Luke 20:42-43
KJV 42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. CEV 42 In the book of Psalms, David himself says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right side 43 until I make your enemies into a footstool for you.’

THURSDAY – The World of the Psalms

The Psalms always put God at the center. They show that in every situation, good or bad, we can turn to God. God is our protector, our provider, and someone we can trust. The Psalms teach us that worship is not just a Sabbath thing—it's a way of life.

No matter where we are or what we're going through, God is always with us. The Psalms help us understand that we can't limit God to just certain parts of our lives – Psalm 16:8
KJV 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. CEV 8 I will always look to you, as you stand beside me and protect me from fear.
Psalm 44:8

KJV 8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah. CEV 8 Trust God, my friends, and always tell him each of your concerns. God is our place of safety.
Psalm 82:8
KJV 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations. CEV 8 Do something, God! Judge the nations of the earth; they belong to you.
Psalm 121:7
KJV 7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. CEV 7 The Lord will protect you and keep you safe from all dangers.

FRIDAY – Further Thought

The Psalms are organized into five books, showing different collections and themes. While most were written during King David's time, they continued to grow over the years. People who put the Psalms together were guided by God, just like the psalmists.

Understanding the Psalms means seeing them as a mix of divine inspiration and human expression. They are a way for God to communicate with us using the language and experiences of ordinary people. So, when we read the Psalms, we're connecting with the timeless experiences of people seeking God.
