1. The Pharisees Question the Healed Man – John 9:17
KJV 17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. CEV 17 they asked the man, “What do you say about this one who healed your eyes?” “He is a prophet!” the man told them.

The Pharisees ask the man about Jesus' identity in the context of how he had his sight restored. The man declares that Jesus is a prophet.

2. Investigation by the Parents – John 9:18-23
KJV 18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? 20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: 21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. 22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him. CEV 18 But the Jewish leaders would not believe that the man had once been blind. They sent for his parents 19 and asked them, “Is this the son that you said was born blind? How can he now see?” 20 The man's parents answered, “We are certain that he is our son, and we know that he was born blind. 21 But we don't know how he got his sight or who gave it to him. Ask him! He is old enough to speak for himself.” 22-23 The man's parents said this because they were afraid of their leaders. The leaders had already agreed that no one was to have anything to do with anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah.

The Jewish leaders do not believe the man was blind and had received his sight until they summon his parents. His parents confirm his blindness and his new ability to see, but they refrain from stating how it happened or who healed him, fearing expulsion from the synagogue.

3. Second Interrogation of the Healed Man – John 9:24-27
KJV 24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. 25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. 26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? 27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? CEV 24 The leaders called the man back and said, “Swear by God to tell the truth! We know that Jesus is a sinner.” 25 The man replied, “I don't know if he is a sinner or not. All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see!” 26 “What did he do to you?” they asked. “How did he heal your eyes?” 27 The man answered, “I have already told you once, and you refused to listen. Why do you want me to tell you again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”

The Pharisees again question the man, now insisting he give glory to God and not to Jesus, whom they label a sinner. The man challenges their disbelief by arguing the rarity of such a miracle if Jesus were not from God.

4. The Man’s Bold Testimony – John 9:28-33
KJV 28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. 29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. 30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. 31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. 32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. 33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. CEV 28 The leaders insulted the man and said, “You are his follower! We are followers of Moses. 29 We are sure God spoke to Moses, but we don't even know where Jesus comes from.” 30 “How strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don't know where he comes from. 31 We know that God listens only to people who love and obey him. God doesn't listen to sinners. 32 And this is the first time in history anyone has ever given sight to someone born blind. 33 Jesus could not do anything unless he came from God.”

Frustrated by the persistent questioning, the man boldly asserts Jesus's divine origin, pointing out that God does not listen to sinners, but to the godly who do His will. He emphasizes the unprecedented nature of healing someone born blind, asserting that if Jesus were not from God, such a miracle would be impossible.

5. The Man is Expelled – John 9:34
KJV 34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. CEV 34 The leaders told the man, “You have been a sinner since the day you were born! Do you think you can teach us anything?” Then they said, “You can never come back into any of our synagogues!”

In response to his boldness, the Pharisees insult him and expel him from the synagogue, accusing him of being steeped in sin from birth.
