What is Truth?

1. Truth is Embodied in Jesus Christ

Jesus identifies Himself as the ultimate truth. Knowing Him is knowing the truth about God and His plan for salvation.

John 14:6
KJV 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. CEV 6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life!” Jesus answered. “Without me, no one can go to the Father.

Jesus reveals God’s truth through His life and ministry.

John 1:14
KJV 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. CEV 14 The Word became a human being and lived here with us. We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. From him the complete gifts of undeserved grace and truth have come down to us.

2. Truth is Found in God’s Word

God’s Word is the ultimate source of truth that sanctifies and transforms believers.

John 17:17
KJV 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. CEV 17 Your word is the truth. So let this truth make them completely yours.

God’s Word is entirely trustworthy and enduring.

Psalm 119:160
KJV 160 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. CEV 160 All you say can be trusted; your teachings are true and will last forever.

3. Truth is the Law of God

God’s law reflects His character and provides a moral foundation for life.

Psalm 119:142
KJV 142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth. CEV 142 You will always do right, and your teachings are true.

4. Truth is Found in the Gospel

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the message of truth that brings salvation.

Ephesians 1:13
KJV 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, CEV 13 Christ also brought you the truth, which is the good news about how you can be saved. You put your faith in Christ and were given the promised Holy Spirit to show you belong to God.

The gospel conveys the hope of eternal life, grounded in truth.

Colossians 1:5
KJV 5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; CEV 5 because what you hope for is kept safe for you in heaven. You first heard about this hope when you believed the true message, which is the good news.

5. Truth is Spiritual Discernment Through the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit leads believers into all truth and helps them understand God’s Word.

John 16:13
KJV 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. CEV 13 The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth. The Spirit doesn't speak on his own. He will tell you only what he has heard from me, and he will let you know what is going to happen.

Truth is spiritually discerned, requiring the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:14
KJV 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. CEV 14 This is why only someone who has God's Spirit can understand spiritual blessings. Anyone who doesn't have God's Spirit thinks these blessings are foolish.

6. Truth is Manifested in God’s Character

God’s truth is part of His divine character, revealed through His actions and covenant relationship.

Exodus 34:6
KJV 6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, CEV 6 Then he passed in front of Moses and called out, “I am the Lord God. I am merciful and very patient with my people. I show great love, and I can be trusted.

God’s truth is the foundation of His justice and righteousness.

Deuteronomy 32:4
KJV 4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. CEV 4 The Lord is a mighty rock, and he never does wrong. God can always be trusted to bring justice.

7. Truth Calls for Obedience and Faithfulness

Living in truth is a mark of true discipleship.

3 John 1:4
KJV 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. CEV 4 Nothing brings me greater happiness than to hear that my children are obeying the truth.

Truth calls for an active response, living out what is revealed in God’s Word.

James 1:22
KJV 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. CEV 22 Obey God's message! Don't fool yourselves by just listening to it.

8. Truth Contrasts with Deception

Truth liberates from the bondage of sin and deception.

John 8:32
KJV 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. CEV 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Rejecting truth leads to spiritual delusion and separation from God.

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12
KJV 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. CEV 10 Lost people will be fooled by his evil deeds. They could be saved, but they will refuse to love the truth and accept it. 11 So God will make sure they are fooled into believing a lie. 12 All of them will be punished, because they would rather do evil than believe the truth.
