Understanding Sacrifice

OVERVIEW
This week, we learn why sacrifice was such a big part of the Bible story. From animals in the temple to the cross of Christ, each sacrifice teaches us something important. But it was never about the blood of bulls or goats. God wants our hearts. We’ll look at what the Passover meant, how Jesus taught at the temple, and what worship in heaven looks like. Most of all, we’ll see that Jesus is the real Lamb who gave His life for us.
SATURDAY – Introduction
Memory Text
Ephesians 5:2
KJV
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
CEV
2 Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.
Summary:
The Bible talks about many sacrifices — offerings, blood, animals. But what does it really mean to sacrifice something to God? The answer is found in Jesus. He gave His life for us because He loved us. He didn’t just give a gift — He gave Himself.
This week helps us understand how the old sacrifices pointed forward to Jesus, and how His death on the cross shows us what real worship is. When we understand Jesus’ love, we learn what it means to truly give ourselves to God in return.
Ellen White Notes:
Ellen White reminds us that every earthly sacrifice pointed to Christ. His life was the “sweet-smelling” offering that pleased the Father — not because of the pain, but because of the love behind it. True worship is when our love answers His.
Reflection
Why was Jesus’ sacrifice more important than all others?
What does it mean to give yourself to God like Jesus did?
SUNDAY – Futile Sacrifices?
Summary:
God gave instructions for sacrifices, but sometimes His people brought offerings without meaning it. They brought animals, but not their hearts. God said their worship was useless — or “futile.” He wanted justice, mercy, and faithfulness, not just rituals (Isaiah 1:11-17
).
KJV
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
CEV
11 “Your sacrifices mean nothing to me. I am sick of your offerings of rams and choice cattle; I don't like the blood of bulls or lambs or goats.
12 “Who asked you to bring all this when you come to worship me? Stay out of my temple!
13 Your sacrifices are worthless, and your incense disgusting. I can't stand the evil you do on your New Moon Festivals or on your Sabbaths and other times of worship.
14 I hate your New Moon Festivals and all others as well. They are a heavy burden I am tired of carrying.
15 “No matter how much you pray, I won't listen. You are too violent.
16 Wash yourselves clean! I hate your filthy deeds. Stop doing wrong
17 and learn to live right. See that justice is done. Defend widows and orphans and help the oppressed.”
Sacrifice is never about the gift alone. It’s about a heart that loves and trusts God. When we treat people badly but still go to church like nothing’s wrong, that’s not real worship. God wants our lives to match our offerings.
Ellen White Notes:
Ellen White explains that true religion changes the heart. If our lives don’t show love, no sacrifice or prayer can please God. He wants our actions, not just our words.
Reflection
Why did God say some sacrifices were useless?
What kind of sacrifice does God truly want from us?
MONDAY – The Blood of Bulls and Goats
Summary:
The Old Testament sacrifices involved the blood of animals. But Hebrews 10:4
says the blood of bulls and goats could never truly take away sins. They were only symbols pointing forward to Jesus’ sacrifice.
KJV
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
CEV
3-4 But the blood of bulls and goats cannot take away sins. It only reminds people of their sins from one year to the next.
If people thought the animal sacrifices saved them by themselves, they missed the point. Real forgiveness comes only through Jesus. The cross wasn’t just another offering — it was the one true and final sacrifice.
Ellen White Notes:
Ellen White reminds us that every animal slain pointed to Jesus. The system of sacrifices was a lesson book, but only Christ could cleanse the soul and change the heart.
Reflection
Why couldn’t animal sacrifices really take away sin?
What was the real purpose of the Old Testament sacrifices?
TUESDAY – The Passover Lamb
Summary:
The Passover in Egypt saved God’s people from death. A lamb had to be killed, and its blood put on the doorposts. This was a symbol of Jesus, the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29
), who would take away the sin of the world.
KJV
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
CEV
29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said: Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
The lamb didn’t just protect — it pointed forward. The people didn’t earn their safety. They were saved because of the blood. In the same way, we are saved by Jesus’ sacrifice, not by anything we do.
Ellen White Notes:
Ellen White says the Passover lamb was one of the clearest symbols of Christ. It showed God’s love and taught faith. It reminded people that salvation comes from trusting God’s promise.
Reflection
What did the Passover lamb symbolize?
What lesson can we learn from the first Passover?
WEDNESDAY – Jesus at the Temple
Summary:
When Jesus came to the temple, He found people turning worship into business. They were buying and selling, not praising and praying. He drove them out and said, “My house will be a house of prayer” (Luke 19:46
).
KJV
46 Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
CEV
46 He told them, “The Scriptures say, ‘My house should be a place of worship.’ But you have made it a place where robbers hide!”
Jesus wasn’t angry at sacrifice itself — He was angry at fake worship. Sacrifices had become about money and pride. But the temple was meant to be a place where people connected with God with humble hearts.
Ellen White Notes:
Ellen White says Jesus was filled with holy love when He cleaned the temple. He wanted people to remember that worship is about being near God, not just going through motions.
Reflection
Why did Jesus clear the temple courts?
What can we learn about worship from Jesus’ actions?
THURSDAY – For You Created All Things!
Summary:
Revelation shows us what worship in heaven looks like. The angels and people praise God not because of fear, but because He is the Creator and Redeemer. They say, “You are worthy... for You created all things” (Revelation 4:11
).
KJV
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
CEV
11 “Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. You created all things, and by your decision they are and were created.”
True worship is about who God is and what He’s done. In heaven, there’s no more pretending. Everyone worships with full hearts because they see God’s love clearly — especially through the Lamb that was slain.
Ellen White Notes:
Ellen White says that heaven is full of joy and music because worship there comes from pure hearts. When we see Jesus face to face, our praise will be even more beautiful than we can imagine now.
Reflection
Why is God praised in heaven according to Revelation 4
?
KJV
1 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.
3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
CEV
1 After this, I looked and saw a door that opened into heaven. Then the voice that had spoken to me at first and that sounded like a trumpet said, “Come up here! I will show you what must happen next.”
2 Right then the Spirit took control of me, and there in heaven I saw a throne and someone sitting on it.
3 The one who was sitting there sparkled like precious stones of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow that looked like an emerald surrounded the throne.
4 Twenty-four other thrones were in a circle around that throne. And on each of these thrones there was an elder dressed in white clothes and wearing a gold crown.
5 Flashes of lightning and roars of thunder came out from the throne in the center of the circle. Seven torches, which are the seven spirits of God, were burning in front of the throne.
6 Also in front of the throne was something that looked like a glass sea, clear as crystal. Around the throne in the center were four living creatures covered front and back with eyes.
7 The first creature was like a lion, the second one was like a bull, the third one had the face of a human, and the fourth was like a flying eagle.
8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings, and their bodies were covered with eyes. Day and night they never stopped singing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, the all-powerful God, who was and is and is coming!”
9 The living creatures kept praising, honoring, and thanking the one who sits on the throne and who lives forever and ever.
10 At the same time the 24 elders knelt down before the one sitting on the throne. And as they worshiped the one who lives forever, they placed their crowns in front of the throne and said,
11 “Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. You created all things, and by your decision they are and were created.”
What makes heavenly worship different from some worship on earth?
FRIDAY – Further Thought
Summary:
Sacrifice and worship aren’t about doing rituals or just attending services. They are about offering ourselves in love and obedience. Jesus is the Lamb, but He also taught us how to live and love.
When we truly understand what He did for us, we won’t just sing songs — we’ll live lives of kindness, trust, and service. That’s the sacrifice that pleases God.
Ellen White Notes:
Ellen White says that the only way we can truly worship is by surrendering our hearts. Jesus gave everything. If we love Him, we’ll give Him everything too.

LESSON SUMMARY
Understanding Sacrifice
This week, we learned that true sacrifice is not about animals or rituals, but about Jesus. He is the real Lamb who died for us. Sacrifices pointed to Him. Now, worship is about giving our hearts, loving others, and trusting Him completely. God doesn’t want fake worship — He wants us.
