- OVERVIEW

God spoke through prophets in both the Old and New Testaments.

Although their circumstances and responsibilities differed, their messages came from the same Holy Spirit.

The gift of prophecy continued in the early Christian church, helping believers understand God's will and remain faithful to Jesus.

This week we will study Jesus as the greatest Prophet, the relationship between apostles and prophets, and the work of New Testament prophets.

We will also discover how God used women and young people, why we must beware of false prophets, and the importance of keeping Jesus and the Bible at the centre of our faith.

- SATURDAY – Introduction

- Memory Text

1 Corinthians 12:4-6
KJV 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. CEV 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. 5 There are different ways to serve the same Lord, 6 and we can each do different things. Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do.

- Lesson

A father and son were comparing two cars from different generations.

Although the cars looked different and had many updated features, their engines were identical.

This illustrates an important truth about God's prophets.

The prophets of the Old and New Testaments lived in different times and faced different challenges.

However, the source of their inspiration remained the same: the Holy Spirit.

God communicated through His prophets in different ways, but their messages consistently pointed toward Jesus Christ.

In the past, God spoke through the prophets. In the New Testament, He revealed Himself most fully through His Son – Hebrews 1:1-3
KJV 1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: CEV 1 Long ago in many ways and at many times God's prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. 2 But now at last, God sent his Son to bring his message to us. God created the universe by his Son, and everything will someday belong to the Son. 3 God's Son has all the brightness of God's own glory and is like him in every way. By his own mighty word, he holds the universe together. After the Son had washed away our sins, he sat down at the right side of the glorious God in heaven.
.

The Holy Spirit continued giving spiritual gifts to the early Christian church.

These gifts were given to strengthen believers, reveal God's truth, and help the church fulfil its mission.

Although the gifts and ministries may differ, they all come from the same God – 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do.
.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that the entire Bible reveals Jesus Christ.

God's messages to humanity come through Him and point toward His work of salvation.

Jesus gave the apostle John important revelations about future events while he was imprisoned on Patmos.

These messages were intended to guide and prepare God's people.

Ellen White also encouraged Adventist believers to remain faithful to the biblical truths that shaped their movement.

She warned against abandoning the foundation of Scripture or accepting teachings that contradict God's Word.

Careful Bible study and dependence on the Holy Spirit are essential for recognising truth.

- Conclusion

The Holy Spirit inspired God's prophets in both the Old and New Testaments.

Although their ministries differed, their messages revealed God's character and pointed people toward Jesus.

The same Spirit continues to guide and strengthen God's church today.

- SUNDAY – Jesus as Prophet

- Lesson

Moses foretold that God would raise up another Prophet whom His people should hear – Deuteronomy 18:15
KJV 15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; CEV 15 Instead, he will choose one of your own people to be a prophet just like me, and you must do what that prophet says.
.

The New Testament identifies Jesus as the fulfilment of this promise – Acts 3:22
KJV 22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. CEV 22 Moses said, “The Lord your God will choose one of your own people to be a prophet, just as he chose me. Listen to everything he tells you.
.

Jesus was recognised as a prophet during His earthly ministry.

However, He was far more than an ordinary prophet.

Read Matthew 16:13-16
KJV 13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. CEV (Mark 8.
27-30; Luke 9.
18-21) 13 When Jesus and his disciples were near the town of Caesarea Philippi, he asked them, “What do people say about the Son of Man?” 14 The disciples answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptist or maybe Elijah or Jeremiah or some other prophet.” 15 Then Jesus asked, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter spoke up, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

1. Jesus Asks About His Identity – Matthew 16:13
KJV 13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? CEV (Mark 8.
27-30; Luke 9.
18-21) 13 When Jesus and his disciples were near the town of Caesarea Philippi, he asked them, “What do people say about the Son of Man?”

Jesus asks His disciples who people believe He is.

2. People Have Different Opinions – Matthew 16:14
KJV 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. CEV 14 The disciples answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptist or maybe Elijah or Jeremiah or some other prophet.”

Some believe Jesus is John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or another prophet.

3. Jesus Asks His Disciples – Matthew 16:15
KJV 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? CEV 15 Then Jesus asked, “But who do you say I am?”

Jesus asks them who they believe He is.

4. Peter Recognises the Messiah – Matthew 16:16
KJV 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. CEV 16 Simon Peter spoke up, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Jesus fulfilled the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.

After His resurrection, He explained to two disciples how the Scriptures pointed toward Him – Luke 24:13-35
KJV 13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? 18 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. 22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; 23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. 24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. 25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? 33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, 34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. 35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. CEV (Mark 16.
12,13) 13 That same day two of Jesus' disciples were going to the village of Emmaus, which was about eleven kilometers from Jerusalem. 14 As they were talking and thinking about what had happened, 15 Jesus came near and started walking along beside them. 16 But they did not know who he was. 17 Jesus asked them, “What were you talking about as you walked along?”The two of them stood there looking sad and gloomy. 18 Then the one named Cleopas asked Jesus, “Are you the only person from Jerusalem who didn't know what was happening there these last few days?” 19 “What do you mean?” Jesus asked. They answered: Those things that happened to Jesus from Nazareth. By what he did and said he showed that he was a powerful prophet, who pleased God and all the people. 20 Then the chief priests and our leaders had him arrested and sentenced to die on a cross. 21 We had hoped that he would be the one to set Israel free! But it has already been three days since all this happened. 22 Some women in our group surprised us. They had gone to the tomb early in the morning, 23 but did not find the body of Jesus. They came back, saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. 24 Some men from our group went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. But they didn't see Jesus either. 25 Then Jesus asked the two disciples, “Why can't you understand? How can you be so slow to believe all that the prophets said? 26 Didn't you know that the Messiah would have to suffer before he was given his glory?” 27 Jesus then explained everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets. 28 When the two of them came near the village where they were going, Jesus seemed to be going farther. 29 They begged him, “Stay with us! It's already late, and the sun is going down.” So Jesus went into the house to stay with them. 30 After Jesus sat down to eat, he took some bread. He blessed it and broke it. Then he gave it to them. 31 At once they knew who he was, but he disappeared. 32 They said to each other, “When he talked with us along the road and explained the Scriptures to us, didn't it warm our hearts?” 33 So they got up and returned to Jerusalem. The two disciples found the eleven apostles and the others gathered together. 34 And they learned from the group that the Lord was really alive and had appeared to Peter. 35 Then the disciples from Emmaus told what happened on the road and how they knew he was the Lord when he broke the bread.
.

But Jesus was not merely another messenger sent by God.

He was the eternal Word through whom everything was created – John 1:1-3
KJV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. CEV 1 In the beginning was the one who is called the Word. The Word was with God and was truly God. 2 From the very beginning the Word was with God. 3 And with this Word, God created all things. Nothing was made without the Word. Everything that was created
.

The One who brought light into the world at creation also came to bring spiritual light and salvation to humanity – Genesis 1:3
KJV 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. CEV 3 God said, “I command light to shine!” And light started shining.
; John 1:4-5
KJV 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. CEV 4 received its life from him, and his life gave light to everyone. 5 The light keeps shining in the dark, and darkness has never put it out.
.

The prophets pointed toward Jesus, but He is the source and fulfilment of their messages.

Peter compared God's prophetic Word to a light shining in darkness – 2 Peter 1:19
KJV 19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: CEV 19 All of this makes us even more certain that what the prophets said is true. So you should pay close attention to their message, as you would to a lamp shining in some dark place. You must keep on paying attention until daylight comes and the morning star rises in your hearts.
.

Prophecy continues guiding believers until Jesus returns and establishes His eternal kingdom.

Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus offers us the gift of eternal life.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White describes an occasion when Simon questioned whether Jesus was truly a prophet.

A woman had approached Jesus with tears of repentance and anointed His feet.

Simon believed that a genuine prophet would reject such a sinful woman.

But Jesus understood both her heart and Simon's hidden thoughts.

Through a parable about two debtors, Jesus helped Simon recognise his own need for forgiveness.

Jesus showed compassion toward the repentant woman while gently exposing Simon's pride.

This experience reveals that Jesus is more than a prophet.

He knows our hearts and offers forgiveness, mercy, and restoration to those who come to Him.

- Conclusion

Jesus fulfilled the promises given through the Old Testament prophets.

He is not only God's messenger but also the Son of God and Creator of all things.

Through His life, death, and resurrection, He reveals God's love and offers salvation to everyone who believes in Him.

- MONDAY – Apostles and Prophets

- Lesson

The New Testament describes the important work of both apostles and prophets.

The word "apostle" means someone who is sent out as a messenger.

Jesus chose twelve disciples to become His apostles.

However, the New Testament also identifies other individuals who were called to serve as apostles.

1. God Calls His Messengers

Paul frequently described himself as an apostle.

He explained that God had called him to share the gospel, particularly with the Gentiles – Romans 1:1-2
KJV 1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) CEV 1 From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus. God chose me to be an apostle, and he appointed me to preach the good news 2 that he promised long ago by what his prophets said in the holy Scriptures.
; 11:13.

Unlike the priesthood, which was passed from father to son, apostles and prophets were chosen according to God's will.

Paul understood that his calling came from God rather than human appointment – 1 Corinthians 1:1
KJV 1 Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, CEV 1 From Paul, chosen by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from Sosthenes, who is also a follower.
.

2. Apostles and Prophets Share Divine Inspiration

The apostles received revelation from God, just as the Old Testament prophets had.

Peter recognised the authority of both the earlier prophets and the apostles who proclaimed Christ's message – 2 Peter 3:1-2
KJV 1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: CEV 1 My dear friends, this is the second letter I have written to encourage you to do some honest thinking. I don't want you to forget 2 what God's prophets said would happen. You must never forget what the holy prophets taught in the past. And you must remember what the apostles told you our Lord and Savior has commanded us to do.
.

Both groups served as God's messengers.

However, not every prophet was an apostle.

For example, Judas and Silas exercised the prophetic gift without belonging to the Twelve – Acts 15:32
KJV 32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them. CEV 32 Judas and Silas were prophets, and they spoke a long time, encouraging and helping the Lord's followers.
.

3. Christ Is the Foundation

Read Ephesians 2:20
KJV 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; CEV 20 You are like a building with the apostles and prophets as the foundation and with Christ as the most important stone.
and Ephesians 3:5
KJV 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; CEV 5 No one knew about this mystery until God's Spirit told it to his holy apostles and prophets.

1. Built on the Apostles and Prophets – Ephesians 2:20
KJV 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; CEV 20 You are like a building with the apostles and prophets as the foundation and with Christ as the most important stone.

The church is described as being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone.

2. God's Mystery Revealed – Ephesians 3:5
KJV 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; CEV 5 No one knew about this mystery until God's Spirit told it to his holy apostles and prophets.

Through the Holy Spirit, God revealed His plan of salvation to His apostles and prophets.

The apostles and prophets helped establish the early Christian church by faithfully communicating God's truth.

But Jesus remained the centre of their messages.

His life, death, resurrection, heavenly ministry, and promised return were the foundation of their teaching.

4. Scripture Remains Our Authority

The writings preserved in the Bible provide the authoritative record of the apostles' and prophets' teachings about Jesus.

Our beliefs must therefore remain firmly grounded in Scripture.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White describes the church as God's spiritual temple.

Through His grace, Jesus transforms sinful people into faithful followers who reflect His character.

The Holy Spirit gives believers the strength and gifts needed to represent Christ to the world.

The apostles helped establish the church, but God's work did not end with them.

Every generation of believers has a responsibility to contribute to the building of God's spiritual temple.

We do this by sharing His Word, helping others, and developing characters that reflect Jesus.

Christ remains the source of the church's strength and the centre of its mission.

- Conclusion

God called both apostles and prophets to communicate His messages and strengthen the church.

Although their responsibilities differed, both received divine inspiration through the Holy Spirit.

Their teachings consistently pointed toward Jesus, the foundation of the church.

The Bible remains our final authority for understanding His life and saving work.

- TUESDAY – Functions of New Testament Prophets

- Lesson

The gift of prophecy continued in the New Testament church.

Although the circumstances had changed since Old Testament times, the purpose of prophetic ministry remained similar.

God used prophets to guide, encourage, strengthen, and correct His people.

1. Encouraging and Strengthening Believers

Paul explained that prophecy was given for the spiritual benefit of the church.

Those who prophesied were to strengthen, encourage, and comfort others – 1 Corinthians 14:3
KJV 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. CEV 3 But when you prophesy, you will be understood, and others will be helped. They will be encouraged and made to feel better.
.

This was especially important when believers faced persecution, suffering, or discouragement.

Prophetic messages reminded them of God's promises and encouraged them to remain faithful.

2. Equipping Believers for Ministry

God gave different spiritual gifts to His church.

Among these were apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers – Ephesians 4:11
KJV 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; CEV 11 Christ chose some of us to be apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers,
.

These gifts were intended to prepare believers for service and strengthen the body of Christ.

Their purpose was to help the church grow in unity, faith, and spiritual maturity – Ephesians 4:12-13
KJV 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: CEV 12 so his people would learn to serve and his body would grow strong. 13 This will continue until we are united by our faith and by our understanding of the Son of God. Then we will be mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him.
.

3. Teaching and Guiding the Church

Prophets also helped believers understand God's will.

Their messages encouraged the church to remain faithful to Christ and His teachings.

Judas and Silas were two New Testament prophets who strengthened and encouraged believers through their words – Acts 15:32
KJV 32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them. CEV 32 Judas and Silas were prophets, and they spoke a long time, encouraging and helping the Lord's followers.
.

Their example shows that prophetic ministry was not limited to predicting future events.

It also involved providing spiritual guidance and encouragement.

4. Communicating God's Faithful Messages

The book of Revelation reminds us that God's prophetic messages are trustworthy.

The angel told John that the words revealed to him were faithful and true – Revelation 22:6
KJV 6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. CEV 6 Then I was told: These words are true and can be trusted. The Lord God controls the spirits of his prophets, and he is the one who sent his angel to show his servants what must happen very soon.
.

When genuine prophets faithfully communicate God's messages, believers can trust the divine truth they convey.

However, Scripture remains the final authority for testing every teaching.

The gift of prophecy was intended to strengthen the church and keep believers focused on Jesus.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that spiritual gifts are blessings given by the Holy Spirit.

God does not give everyone the same gifts.

Some receive wisdom, others knowledge, faith, healing, prophecy, or other abilities needed for His work – 1 Corinthians 12:8-11
KJV 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. CEV 8 Some of us can speak with wisdom, while others can speak with knowledge, but these gifts come from the same Spirit. 9 To others the Spirit has given great faith or the power to heal the sick 10 or the power to work mighty miracles. Some of us are prophets, and some of us recognize when God's Spirit is present. Others can speak different kinds of languages, and still others can tell what these languages mean. 11 But it is the Spirit who does all this and decides which gifts to give to each of us.
.

Each gift is distributed according to the Spirit's will.

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to His followers, and after His ascension, the disciples received this gift in a special way.

Through prayer, faith, and surrender to God, they were prepared for their mission.

Ellen White emphasises that human abilities alone cannot accomplish God's work.

Education, talent, and eloquence may be useful, but without the Holy Spirit, they cannot bring genuine spiritual transformation.

Even those with limited abilities can become powerful instruments in God's hands when they depend on Him.

- Conclusion

New Testament prophets strengthened believers through encouragement, teaching, correction, and guidance.

Their ministry helped the church remain united and faithful during difficult times.

The Holy Spirit continues giving different gifts so believers can serve one another and grow toward spiritual maturity in Christ.

- WEDNESDAY – Female Prophets and Young Pastoral Associates

- Lesson

God called both men and women to serve as prophets in the Old Testament.

The New Testament shows that this continued in the early Christian church.

God also used young believers in important leadership roles.

1. Anna – A Faithful Prophetess

Anna was an elderly prophetess who devoted her life to worship, fasting, and prayer.

When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple, Anna recognised the significance of His arrival.

She thanked God and spoke about Jesus to those who were waiting for Jerusalem's redemption – Luke 2:36-38
KJV 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. CEV 36 The prophet Anna was also there in the temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. In her youth she had been married for seven years, but her husband died. 37 And now she was 84 years old. Night and day she served God in the temple by praying and often going without eating. 38 At this time Anna came in and praised God. She spoke about the child Jesus to everyone who hoped for Jerusalem to be set free.
.

Her experience shows how God used a faithful woman to proclaim the coming of the Saviour.

2. Philip's Four Daughters

Philip the evangelist had four unmarried daughters who possessed the gift of prophecy – Acts 21:9
KJV 9 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. CEV 9 and he had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
.

The Bible does not record their prophetic messages or explain the full extent of their ministry.

However, their example confirms that God gave the prophetic gift to women in the New Testament church.

Their messages were not included in the Bible.

This reminds us that not every genuine prophet contributed writings to Scripture.

3. Timothy – A Young Pastoral Leader

The apostle Paul mentored young believers and prepared them for ministry.

Timothy was one of these young leaders.

Paul regarded him as a spiritual son and encouraged him to remain faithful to his calling – 1 Timothy 1:2
KJV 2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. CEV 2 Timothy, because of our faith, you are like a son to me. I pray that God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ will be kind and merciful to you. May they bless you with peace!
.

He reminded Timothy that his ministry had been accompanied by prophetic messages and encouraged him to remain strong in his spiritual responsibilities – 1 Timothy 1:18
KJV 18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; CEV 18 Timothy, my son, the instructions I am giving you are based on what some prophets once said about you. If you follow these instructions, you will fight like a good soldier.
.

Paul also urged Timothy not to allow others to look down on him because of his youth – 1 Timothy 4:12
KJV 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. CEV 12 Don't let anyone make fun of you, just because you are young. Set an example for other followers by what you say and do, as well as by your love, faith, and purity.
.

4. Titus – A Young Church Leader

Titus was another young leader whom Paul guided.

Paul entrusted him with the responsibility of appointing church leaders in Crete.

He encouraged Titus to teach sound doctrine, correct wrongdoing, and lead with confidence – Titus 1:4-5
KJV 4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. 5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: CEV 4 Titus, because of our faith, you are like a son to me. I pray that God our Father and Christ Jesus our Savior will be kind to you and will bless you with peace! 5 I left you in Crete to do what had been left undone and to appoint leaders for the churches in each town. As I told you,
; 2:15.

These examples remind us that God can use people of different ages and backgrounds in His service.

Young or old, male or female, every believer has an important role in God's work.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White describes how Simeon and Anna recognised the infant Jesus as the promised Saviour.

While others saw an ordinary child, these faithful believers understood His importance through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Anna responded with gratitude and shared the good news with others.

Ellen White also emphasises the importance of experienced ministers training younger workers.

Paul demonstrated this by mentoring Timothy, Titus, and other young believers.

He gave them responsibilities and encouraged them to develop their abilities.

However, younger workers should not simply imitate their teachers without thinking.

They must learn to study God's Word, exercise good judgment, and develop their own personal relationship with Christ.

Both experienced and younger believers have valuable contributions to make in God's work.

- Conclusion

The New Testament shows that God called women such as Anna and Philip's daughters to prophetic ministry.

He also used young leaders such as Timothy and Titus to strengthen the church.

God's work is not limited by age or gender.

He calls believers to serve faithfully according to the gifts and responsibilities He gives them.

- THURSDAY – False Prophets in the New Testament

- Lesson

Jesus warned His followers that false prophets would appear and deceive many people.

Some would even claim to be Christ or perform impressive signs and wonders.

These deceptions could be so convincing that even faithful believers might be in danger of being misled – Matthew 24:23-24
KJV 23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. CEV 23 Someone may say, “Here is the Messiah!” or “There he is!” But don't believe it. 24 False messiahs and false prophets will come and work great miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God's chosen ones.
.

1. False Prophets Can Perform Signs

Jesus warned that false prophets would use extraordinary signs and wonders to support their claims.

However, supernatural events do not automatically prove that a message comes from God.

Satan and his angels also possess supernatural power and seek to deceive humanity.

Paul reminds us that our spiritual struggle involves forces of evil beyond what we can see – Ephesians 6:12
KJV 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. CEV 12 We are not fighting against humans. We are fighting against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world.
.

2. False Prophets Can Appear Trustworthy

Jesus compared false prophets to wolves disguised as sheep.

They may appear harmless or religious while secretly leading people away from God's truth – Matthew 7:15
KJV 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. CEV (Luke 6.
43-45) 15 Watch out for false prophets! They dress up like sheep, but inside they are wolves who have come to attack you.
.

Jesus explained that we can recognise them by their fruits.

Their teachings, character, and actions reveal whether they are truly following God – Matthew 7:16-20
KJV 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. CEV 16 You can tell what they are by what they do. No one picks grapes or figs from thornbushes. 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. 19 Every tree producing bad fruit will be chopped down and burned. 20 You can tell who the false prophets are by their deeds.
.

3. Deception Will Increase

Jesus warned that many false prophets would arise and deceive people – Matthew 24:11
KJV 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. CEV 11 Many false prophets will come and fool a lot of people.
.

Their teachings may sound convincing and attract large numbers of followers.

Therefore, we must not accept every spiritual claim without examining it carefully.

John also instructed believers to test the spirits to determine whether they come from God – 1 John 4:1
KJV 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. CEV 1 Dear friends, don't believe everyone who claims to have the Spirit of God. Test them all to find out if they really do come from God. Many false prophets have already gone out into the world,
.

4. God's Armour Protects Us

Read Ephesians 6:10-18
KJV 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; CEV 10 Finally, let the mighty strength of the Lord make you strong. 11 Put on all the armor that God gives, so you can defend yourself against the devil's tricks. 12 We are not fighting against humans. We are fighting against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world. 13 So put on all the armor that God gives. Then when that evil day comes, you will be able to defend yourself. And when the battle is over, you will still be standing firm. 14 Be ready! Let the truth be like a belt around your waist, and let God's justice protect you like armor. 15 Your desire to tell the good news about peace should be like shoes on your feet. 16 Let your faith be like a shield, and you will be able to stop all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Let God's saving power be like a helmet, and for a sword use God's message that comes from the Spirit. 18 Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God's people.

1. Be Strong in the Lord – Ephesians 6:10-12
CEV 10 Finally, let the mighty strength of the Lord make you strong. 11 Put on all the armor that God gives, so you can defend yourself against the devil's tricks. 12 We are not fighting against humans. We are fighting against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world.

Our strength comes from God because we face spiritual enemies, not merely human opposition.

2. Put On God's Armour – Ephesians 6:13-15
KJV 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; CEV 13 So put on all the armor that God gives.

Truth, righteousness, and readiness to share the gospel help us stand firm.

3. Hold Faith and Salvation – Ephesians 6:16-17
KJV 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: CEV 16 Let your faith be like a shield, and you will be able to stop all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Let God's saving power be like a helmet, and for a sword use God's message that comes from the Spirit.

Faith protects us from Satan's attacks, while salvation and God's Word strengthen our defence.

4. Continue in Prayer – Ephesians 6:18
KJV 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; CEV 18 Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God's people.

Prayer keeps us dependent on God and spiritually alert.

God has provided everything we need to resist deception.

By studying Scripture, living by faith, praying, and depending on the Holy Spirit, we can remain firmly grounded in His truth.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White warns that many false teachers will appear religious while leading people away from Christ.

They may claim to serve God but fail to demonstrate His character.

Jesus taught that genuine spiritual leaders should reflect His humility, love, and compassion.

We must therefore examine both their teachings and their lives.

Ellen White also emphasises that Christian character develops through a daily relationship with Jesus.

As we study His life, we become more aware of our own weaknesses and our need for His grace.

True spiritual growth requires continual prayer, self-examination, and surrender to God.

The safest protection against deception is to keep Jesus at the centre of our lives and remain faithful to His Word.

- Conclusion

Jesus warned that false prophets would deceive many people, sometimes through impressive signs and convincing appearances.

We must not judge spiritual messages by popularity or supernatural claims.

Instead, we should test every teaching against Scripture, examine its fruits, and remain close to Jesus.

God gives us spiritual protection through His Word, faith, prayer, and the Holy Spirit.

- FRIDAY – Keeping Jesus and His Word at the Center

- Lesson

Throughout history, God called prophets to help people know Him and remain faithful to His Word.

The ministry of Ellen G. White followed this same purpose.

Her work had two central goals: to lead people to Jesus Christ and to encourage them to study the Bible.

1. Leading People to Jesus

Ellen White loved Jesus and wanted others to understand His character.

Her five-book series, The Conflict of the Ages, begins and ends with the words "God is love."

In Steps to Christ, she emphasised that spiritual growth comes through a daily relationship with Jesus.

Our joy, usefulness, and growth in grace depend on remaining connected to Him.

Jesus is both the beginning and the completion of our faith – Hebrews 12:2
KJV 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. CEV 2 We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because he knew later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God's throne!
.

While writing The Desire of Ages, Ellen White was deeply moved as she considered Christ's suffering and sacrifice.

Her writings consistently directed readers toward His love and saving work.

2. Pointing People to the Bible

Ellen White also believed that Scripture must remain the foundation of Christian faith.

She described her writings as a "lesser light" leading people to the "greater light" of the Bible.

Her purpose was not to replace Scripture but to encourage people to study and obey it.

She urged believers to accept God's Word as the rule for their faith and daily conduct.

The Bible reveals God's character, His plan of salvation, and His will for our lives.

Ellen White repeatedly warned against allowing human teachings to replace biblical truth.

3. Remaining Faithful to Christ's Teachings

Ellen White believed that anyone claiming to speak for Christ must remain faithful to His teachings.

True prophetic messages should agree with the truths revealed through Jesus and the biblical prophets.

God's messengers are not called to introduce teachings that contradict Scripture.

Instead, their responsibility is to help people understand and follow God's revealed Word.

The Bible remains the final authority for Christian faith and practice.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White encouraged believers to study the Bible carefully and prayerfully.

God's Word provides spiritual strength and protects us from misleading teachings.

The Scriptures reveal Jesus and help us understand His plan of salvation.

Bible study should not be limited to gaining knowledge.

Its teachings should shape our thoughts, decisions, relationships, and daily conduct.

Families are also encouraged to make Scripture an important part of their homes.

When God's Word is studied and followed, it strengthens faith and helps believers develop Christlike characters.

- Conclusion

The purpose of genuine prophetic ministry is to bring people closer to God.

Ellen White consistently encouraged believers to love Jesus and study Scripture.

Her writings were intended to support biblical truth, not replace it.

Our faith must remain centred on Christ and firmly established in God's Word.

- LESSON SUMMARY

New Testament Prophets

The gift of prophecy continued in the New Testament church.

Although prophets served in different circumstances from those in the Old Testament, the same Holy Spirit inspired their messages.

Their purpose was to reveal God's truth, strengthen believers, and point people toward Jesus Christ.

Jesus as Prophet

Jesus fulfilled the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament.

He is greater than every human prophet because He is the Son of God, the Creator, and the promised Saviour.

Through His life, death, and resurrection, He reveals God's love and offers eternal life – Acts 3:22
Listen to everything he tells you.
; John 1:1-3
KJV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. CEV 1 In the beginning was the one who is called the Word. The Word was with God and was truly God. 2 From the very beginning the Word was with God. 3 And with this Word, God created all things. Nothing was made without the Word. Everything that was created
.

Apostles and Prophets

God called both apostles and prophets to communicate His messages and strengthen the early church.

They received divine revelation and helped establish the church upon the truth of Jesus Christ.

Jesus remains the chief cornerstone and foundation of our faith – Ephesians 2:20
KJV 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; CEV 20 You are like a building with the apostles and prophets as the foundation and with Christ as the most important stone.
; 3:5.

Functions of New Testament Prophets

New Testament prophets encouraged, strengthened, comforted, and guided believers.

Their ministry helped the church grow in unity, faith, and spiritual maturity.

The Holy Spirit gave different gifts so believers could serve one another and fulfil God's mission – 1 Corinthians 14:3
KJV 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. CEV 3 But when you prophesy, you will be understood, and others will be helped. They will be encouraged and made to feel better.
; Ephesians 4:11-13
KJV 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: CEV 11 Christ chose some of us to be apostles, prophets, missionaries, pastors, and teachers, 12 so his people would learn to serve and his body would grow strong. 13 This will continue until we are united by our faith and by our understanding of the Son of God. Then we will be mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him.
.

Female Prophets and Young Pastoral Associates

God called women such as Anna and Philip's daughters to prophetic ministry.

He also used young leaders such as Timothy and Titus to strengthen the church.

These examples remind us that God can use people of different ages and backgrounds in His service – Luke 2:36-38
She spoke about the child Jesus to everyone who hoped for Jerusalem to be set free.
; Acts 21:9
KJV 9 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. CEV 9 and he had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
.

False Prophets in the New Testament

Jesus warned that false prophets would deceive many people, sometimes through impressive signs and wonders.

We must test every teaching against Scripture and examine the fruits of those who claim to speak for God.

Faith, prayer, God's Word, and the Holy Spirit protect us from spiritual deception – Matthew 24:23-24
They will even try to fool God's chosen ones.
; Ephesians 6:10-18
Stay alert and keep praying for God's people.
.

Keeping Jesus and His Word at the Center

Ellen White's ministry focused on leading people to Jesus and encouraging them to study the Bible.

She described her writings as a "lesser light" pointing toward the "greater light" of Scripture.

Her example reminds us that genuine prophetic ministry must always remain faithful to Jesus and God's Word.

The central message of this lesson is that the Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to strengthen God's people and lead them toward Christ.

Whatever gifts we receive, we are called to use them faithfully, remain grounded in Scripture, and keep Jesus at the centre of our lives.

"Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit." – 1 Corinthians 12:4
KJV 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. CEV 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit.
