Jesus and His disciples go up a mountain, preparing for a significant event as the Passover Festival was near.
3. The Problem of Feeding the Crowd – John 6:5-6
KJV
5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
CEV
5 When Jesus saw the large crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, “Where will we get enough food to feed all these people?”
6 He said this to test Philip, since he already knew what he was going to do.
Seeing the large crowd, Jesus tests Philip by asking where to buy bread for the people, highlighting the disciples' limitations.
4. Philip and Andrew’s Responses – John 6:7-9
KJV
7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,
9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
CEV
7 Philip answered, “Don't you know that it would take almost a year's wages just to buy only a little bread for each of these people?”
8 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the disciples. He spoke up and said,
9 “There is a boy here who has five small loaves of barley bread and two fish. But what good is that with all these people?”
Philip answers that even a large sum of money would not buy enough bread for everyone to have a little; Andrew mentions a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish but doubts it's enough.
5. The Miracle of Multiplication – John 6:10-11
KJV
10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
CEV
10 The ground was covered with grass, and Jesus told his disciples to tell everyone to sit down. About 5,000 men were in the crowd.
11 Jesus took the bread in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he passed the bread to the people, and he did the same with the fish, until everyone had plenty to eat.
Jesus has the people sit down, gives thanks, and distributes the loaves and fish, which miraculously multiply to feed all.
6. Gathering the Leftovers – John 6:12-13
KJV
12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
CEV
12 The people ate all they wanted, and Jesus told his disciples to gather up the leftovers, so that nothing would be wasted.
13 The disciples gathered them up and filled twelve large baskets with what was left over from the five barley loaves.
After everyone is full, Jesus instructs them to gather the pieces left over, resulting in twelve baskets of leftovers, ensuring no waste.
7. The People’s Reaction – John 6:14

The people, witnessing the miracle, proclaim Jesus as "the Prophet who is to come into the world," recognizing His messianic role.
