Free Will, Love, and Divine Providence.
Free Will, Love, and Divine Providence

OVERVIEW
This week, we explore how God’s providence operates in a world where human free will exists. Some believe that God determines everything, while others recognize that God allows people to make real choices. The Bible shows that God’s plan takes human decisions into account, while working all things for good for those who trust in Him.
SATURDAY – Introduction
Memory Text
John 16:33
KJV
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
CEV
33 I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.
Lesson
Some believe that everything happens exactly as God wills. In this view, God determines every event, including human actions. Others believe that God allows real freedom, which means that some events occur that are not His will.
The Bible shows that God does not force choices upon people. Though He has the power to control everything, He chooses to respect human freedom, even when people act against His desires. This is why sin and suffering exist—not because God causes them, but because He allows free will.
EGW Notes (Paraphrased)
Ellen White explains that God’s providence should be remembered and recounted. By reflecting on how He has led us, we gain faith for the future.
Conclusion
God’s providence is not about control but about guiding events for ultimate good.
Reflection
What does John 16:33
teach about God’s presence in our struggles?
How does understanding free will help us see God's providence more clearly?
SUNDAY – Our Sovereign God
Lesson
Read the following:
Psalm 81:11-14
KJV
11 But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
13 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways!
14 I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries.
CEV
11 “But, my people, Israel, you refused to listen, and you would have nothing to do with me!
12 So I let you be stubborn and keep on following your own advice.
13 “My people, Israel, if only you would listen and do as I say!
14 I, the Lord, would quickly defeat your enemies with my mighty power.
Isaiah 30:15, 18
KJV
18 And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.
CEV
18 The Lord God is waiting to show how kind he is and to have pity on you. The Lord always does right; he blesses those who trust him.
Isaiah 66:4
KJV
4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
CEV
4 You refused to answer when I called out; you paid no attention to my instructions. Instead, you did what I hated, knowing it was wrong. Now I will punish you in a way you dread the most.
Luke 13:34
KJV
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!
CEV
(Matthew 23.
37-39)
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me.
Some believe that whatever happens must be God’s will because He is all-powerful. However, these verses show that God’s will is not always done. He desires obedience and love, but He allows people to reject Him.
If everything happened exactly as God willed, there would be no sin or suffering. Instead, the Bible describes God as longing for things that do not happen, which means that human choices play a real role in history.
EGW Notes (Paraphrased)
Ellen White explains that when people persist in rejecting God, He allows them to experience the results of their choices.
Conclusion
God does not force His will upon anyone but calls people to follow Him willingly.
Reflection
What do these verses teach about how God's will is sometimes rejected?
How does this understanding help us trust God in difficult times?
MONDAY – Pantokrator
Lesson
Read the following:
Revelation 11:17
KJV
17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.
CEV
17 They said, “Lord God All-Powerful, you are and you were, and we thank you. You used your great power and started ruling.
Jeremiah 32:17-20
KJV
17 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
18 Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is his name,
19 Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:
20 Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, even unto this day, and in Israel, and among other men; and hast made thee a name, as at this day;
CEV
17 Lord God, you stretched out your mighty arm and made the sky and the earth. You can do anything.
18 You show kindness for a thousand generations, but you also punish people for the sins of their parents. You are the Lord All-Powerful.
19 With great wisdom you make plans, and with your great power you do all the mighty things you planned. Nothing we do is hidden from your eyes, and you reward or punish us as we deserve.
20 You are famous because you worked miracles in Egypt, and you are still working them in Israel and in the rest of the world as well.
Luke 1:37
KJV
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
CEV
37 Nothing is impossible for God!”
Matthew 19:26
KJV
26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
CEV
26 Jesus looked straight at them and said, “There are some things people cannot do, but God can do anything.”
Hebrews 1:3
KJV
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:
CEV
3 God's Son has all the brightness of God's own glory and is like him in every way. By his own mighty word, he holds the universe together. After the Son had washed away our sins, he sat down at the right side of the glorious God in heaven.
The Bible teaches that God is all-powerful, but this does not mean He can do anything. For example, He cannot lie or deny Himself. His power is always used in harmony with His character.
God wants to save everyone, but He will not force anyone to be saved. His power works in cooperation with human choices.
EGW Notes (Paraphrased)
Ellen White explains that God’s power is most clearly seen in Christ’s death and resurrection, which demonstrate both justice and mercy.
Conclusion
God’s power is not about force but about love. He is Almighty, yet He respects freedom.
Reflection
What do these verses teach about God’s power and its limits?
How does understanding God's power bring comfort and assurance?
TUESDAY – Providence and Free Will
Lesson
Read the following:
Genesis 45:4-8
KJV
4 And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt.
5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.
6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.
7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
CEV
4 Joseph told them to come closer to him, and when they did, he said: Yes, I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt.
5 Don't worry or blame yourselves for what you did. God is the one who sent me ahead of you to save lives.
6 There has already been a famine for two years, and for five more years no one will plow fields or harvest grain.
7 But God sent me on ahead of you to keep your families alive and to save you in this wonderful way.
8 After all, you weren't really the ones who sent me here — it was God. He made me the highest official in the king's court and placed me over all Egypt.
Romans 8:28
KJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
CEV
28 We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose,
The story of Joseph is a powerful example of how God’s providence works alongside human choices. Joseph’s brothers acted out of jealousy, selling him into slavery. However, God worked through their actions, ultimately placing Joseph in a position to save many lives.
Romans 8:28
assures us that God can work all things for good for those who trust Him. This does not mean that everything that happens is good, but that God can bring good even out of suffering and mistakes.
KJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
CEV
28 We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose,
EGW Notes (Paraphrased)
Ellen White explains that God does not cause suffering, but He can use it to accomplish His purposes.
Conclusion

WEDNESDAY – The Bounds of Evil
Lesson
Read the following:
Job 1:6-12
KJV
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them.
7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
CEV
6 One day, when the angels had gathered around the Lord, and Satan was there with them,
7 the Lord asked, “Satan, where have you been?”Satan replied, “I have been going all over the earth.”
8 Then the Lord asked, “What do you think of my servant Job? No one on earth is like him — he is a truly good person, who respects me and refuses to do evil.”
9 “Why shouldn't he respect you?” Satan remarked.
10 “You are like a wall protecting not only him, but his entire family and all his property. You make him successful in whatever he does, and his flocks and herds are everywhere.
11 Try taking away everything he owns, and he will curse you to your face.”
12 The Lord replied, “All right, Satan, do what you want with anything that belongs to him, but don't harm Job.” Then Satan left.
Job 2:1-6
KJV
1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.
2 And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
3 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
4 And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
6 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
CEV
1 When the angels gathered around the Lord again, Satan was there with them,
2 and the Lord asked, “Satan, where have you been?”Satan replied, “I have been going all over the earth.”
3 Then the Lord asked, “What do you think of my servant Job? No one on earth is like him — he is a truly good person, who respects me and refuses to do evil. And he hasn't changed, even though you persuaded me to destroy him for no reason.”
4 Satan answered, “There's no pain like your own. People will do anything to stay alive.
5 Try striking Job's own body with pain, and he will curse you to your face.”
6 “All right!” the Lord replied. “Make Job suffer as much as you want, but just don't kill him.”
The story of Job reveals that Satan does not have unlimited power. Though he wanted to harm Job, God set boundaries on what he could do. This shows that God limits evil, even when He allows trials to happen.
This also applies to our lives. Though we may suffer, we can trust that God is in control and will never allow more than we can bear.
EGW Notes (Paraphrased)
Ellen White explains that God never allows trials to come to us unless they can be turned for good.
Conclusion
God permits suffering for a time, but He never loses control.

THURSDAY – God’s Providence in Our Lives
Lesson
Read the following:
Matthew 10:29-31
KJV
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
CEV
29 Aren't two sparrows sold for only a penny? But your Father knows when any one of them falls to the ground.
30 Even the hairs on your head are counted.
31 So don't be afraid! You are worth much more than many sparrows.
Psalm 139:1-6
KJV
1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
CEV
(A psalm by David for the music leader.)
1 You have looked deep into my heart, Lord, and you know all about me.
2 You know when I am resting or when I am working, and from heaven you discover my thoughts.
3 You notice everything I do and everywhere I go.
4 Before I even speak a word, you know what I will say,
5 and with your powerful arm you protect me from every side.
6 I can't understand all of this! Such wonderful knowledge is far above me.
Jesus taught that not even a sparrow falls to the ground without God’s knowledge. This means that God is involved in even the smallest details of our lives. Psalm 139
describes how God knows everything about us, from our thoughts to our future.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.
19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
21 Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
7 Where could I go to escape from your Spirit or from your sight?
8 If I were to climb up to the highest heavens, you would be there. If I were to dig down to the world of the dead you would also be there.
9 Suppose I had wings like the dawning day and flew across the ocean.
10 Even then your powerful arm would guide and protect me.
11 Or suppose I said, “I'll hide in the dark until night comes to cover me over.”
12 But you see in the dark because daylight and dark are all the same to you.
13 You are the one who put me together inside my mother's body,
14 and I praise you because of the wonderful way you created me. Everything you do is marvelous! Of this I have no doubt.
15 Nothing about me is hidden from you! I was secretly woven together out of human sight,
16 but with your own eyes you saw my body being formed. Even before I was born, you had written in your book everything about me.
17 Your thoughts are far beyond my understanding, much more than I could ever imagine.
18 I try to count your thoughts, but they outnumber the grains of sand on the beach. And when I awake, I will find you nearby.
19 How I wish that you would kill all cruel and heartless people and protect me from them!
20 They are always rebelling and speaking evil of you.
21 You know I hate anyone who hates you, Lord, and refuses to obey.
22 They are my enemies too, and I truly hate them.
23 Look deep into my heart, God, and find out everything I am thinking.
24 Don't let me follow evil ways, but lead me in the way that time has proven true.
God’s providence is not just about global events—He is also personally involved in our lives.

Conclusion
God’s providence is not just about the big picture—it is deeply personal.

FRIDAY – Further Thought
Lesson
This week’s study has shown that God’s providence works through human free will, not against it. He does not force people’s choices, but He can still bring good out of even the worst situations.

LESSON SUMMARY

This week’s lesson explored how God’s providence works within human free will. Though He allows people to make choices, He is still in control and can bring good out of any situation. We can trust that God is always guiding, working for our good, and preparing us for His eternal kingdom.
