- OVERVIEW

This week, we study the cosmic conflict between Christ and Satan—a battle that started in heaven and continues on earth. The Bible reveals that evil did not originate with God but with Lucifer’s rebellion. Though sin has caused great suffering, God’s plan will ultimately restore righteousness.

We will explore where the Bible teaches about this great conflict and what it reveals about the nature of the battle.

- SATURDAY – Introduction

- Memory Text

Genesis 3:15
KJV 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. CEV 15 You and this woman will hate each other; your descendants and hers will always be enemies. One of hers will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel.”

- Lesson

Throughout the Bible, we see a great conflict between Christ and Satan. Some Christian traditions reject the idea of a cosmic battle, but the Bible does not ignore it. The Gospels frequently mention the devil, and Revelation describes war in heaven.

The cosmic conflict is not just about power—it is a conflict of truth versus lies. The devil has tried to misrepresent God’s character, while Jesus came to reveal the truth about God’s love and justice.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that sin has no logical explanation. It is a rebellion against God’s law of love. However, God’s justice and mercy will ultimately be seen by all.

- Conclusion

Though we live in a fallen world, the Bible assures us that God will bring an end to the conflict.

- Reflection

What does Genesis 3:15
KJV 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. CEV 15 You and this woman will hate each other; your descendants and hers will always be enemies. One of hers will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel.”

- SUNDAY – An Enemy Has Done This

- Lesson

Read the following:

Matthew 13:24-27
KJV 24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: 25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? CEV 24 Jesus then told them this story: The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a farmer scattered good seed in a field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and scattered weed seeds in the field and then left. 26 When the plants came up and began to mature, the farmer's servants could see the weeds. 27 The servants came and asked, “Sir, didn't you scatter good seed in your field? Where did these weeds come from?”

Jesus told a parable about a man who sowed good seed, but later his servants found tares among the wheat. When they asked how this happened, he replied, “An enemy has done this” (Matthew 13:28
KJV 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? CEV 28 “An enemy did this,” he replied. His servants then asked, “Do you want us to go out and pull up the weeds?”
).

This parable answers the question: If God is good, why is there evil? The world was created perfectly, but Satan introduced sin. Evil does not come from God—it is the result of the devil’s opposition.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that God did not destroy Satan immediately because the angels would not have fully understood the consequences of sin. Evil had to fully reveal itself before it could be removed forever.

- Conclusion

The parable of the wheat and tares reminds us that God will one day remove evil completely.

- MONDAY – The Origin of the Controversy on Earth

- Lesson

Read the following:

Genesis 1:31
KJV 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. CEV 31 God looked at what he had done. All of it was very good! Evening came, then morning — that was the sixth day.

Genesis 3:1-7
KJV 1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. CEV 1 The snake was sneakier than any of the other wild animals that the Lord God had made. One day it came to the woman and asked, “Did God tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?” 2 The woman answered, “God said we could eat fruit from any tree in the garden, 3 except the one in the middle. He told us not to eat fruit from that tree or even to touch it. If we do, we will die.” 4 “No, you won't!” the snake replied. 5 “God understands what will happen on the day you eat fruit from that tree. You will see what you have done, and you will know the difference between right and wrong, just as God does.” 6 The woman stared at the fruit. It looked beautiful and tasty. She wanted the wisdom that it would give her, and she ate some of the fruit. Her husband was there with her, so she gave some to him, and he ate it too. 7 At once they saw what they had done, and they realized they were naked. Then they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

Genesis 1:31 tells us that everything God created was “very good”. There was no evil or suffering in the original world. However, Genesis 3
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. 9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. 16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. 20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. 8 Late in the afternoon, when the breeze began to blow, the man and woman heard the Lord God walking in the garden. So they hid behind some trees. 9 The Lord God called out to the man and asked, “Where are you?” 10 The man answered, “I was naked, and when I heard you walking through the garden, I was frightened and hid!” 11 “How did you know you were naked?” God asked. “Did you eat any fruit from that tree in the middle of the garden?” 12 “It was the woman you put here with me,” the man said. “She gave me some of the fruit, and I ate it.” 13 The Lord God then asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The snake tricked me,” she answered, “and I ate some of that fruit.” 14 So the Lord God said to the snake: “Because of what you have done, you will be the only animal to suffer this curse — For as long as you live, you will crawl on your stomach and eat dirt. 15 You and this woman will hate each other; your descendants and hers will always be enemies. One of hers will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel.” 16 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “You will suffer terribly when you give birth. But you will still desire your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 The Lord said to the man, “You listened to your wife and ate the fruit I told you not to eat. And so, the ground will be under a curse because of what you did. As long as you live, you will have to struggle to grow enough food. 18 Your food will be plants, but the ground will produce thorns and thistles. 19 You will sweat all your life to earn a living; you were made out of soil, and you will once again turn into soil.” 20 The man Adam named his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all who live. 21 Then the Lord God made clothes out of animal skins for the man and his wife. 22 The Lord said, “They now know the difference between right and wrong, just as we do. But they must not be allowed to eat fruit from the tree that lets them live forever.” 23 So the Lord God sent them out of the Garden of Eden, where they would have to work the ground from which the man had been made. 24 Then God put winged creatures at the entrance to the garden and a flaming, flashing sword to guard the way to the life-giving tree.
describes the deception of Eve. The serpent lied about God’s word, and humanity chose to distrust God.

The great controversy is about truth versus lies. Satan tries to misrepresent God, but Jesus came to reveal the truth.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that Satan’s first attack was to distort God’s commands. The same deception continues today.

- Conclusion

Satan deceived Adam and Eve, but God’s plan will restore what was lost.

- TUESDAY – War in Heaven

- Lesson

Read the following:

Revelation 12:7-9
KJV 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. CEV 7 A war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels were fighting against the dragon and its angels. 8 But the dragon lost the battle. It and its angels were forced out of their places in heaven 9 and were thrown down to the earth. Yes, that old snake and his angels were thrown out of heaven! That snake, who fools everyone on earth, is known as the devil and Satan.

Isaiah 14:12-14
KJV 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. CEV 12 You, the bright morning star, have fallen from the sky! You brought down other nations; now you are brought down. 13 You said to yourself, “I'll climb to heaven and place my throne above the highest stars. I'll sit there with the gods far away in the north. 14 I'll be above the clouds, just like God Most High.”

The Bible teaches that sin did not originate on Earth but began with Lucifer’s rebellion in heaven. Revelation describes a war in heaven, where Satan and his angels were cast out. Isaiah reveals that Lucifer’s pride led him to desire God’s throne.

This shows that sin is more than just breaking rules—it is a rebellion against God’s authority and love.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that Lucifer’s rebellion began with self-exaltation. He spread lies about God, causing many angels to doubt and follow him.

- Conclusion

The great controversy started in heaven itself, but God’s plan will bring an end to sin.

- WEDNESDAY – The Accuser of Our Brethren

- Lesson

Read the following:

Revelation 12:10-12
KJV 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. 12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. CEV 10 Then I heard a voice from heaven shout, “Our God has shown his saving power, and his kingdom has come! God's own Chosen One has shown his authority. Satan accused our people in the presence of God day and night. Now he has been thrown out! 11 “Our people defeated Satan because of the blood of the Lamb and the message of God. They were willing to give up their lives. 12 “The heavens should rejoice, together with everyone who lives there. But pity the earth and the sea, because the devil was thrown down to the earth. He knows his time is short, and he is very angry.”

Zechariah 3:1-4
KJV 1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. 2 And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. 4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. CEV 1 I was given another vision. This time Joshua the high priest was standing in front of the Lord's angel. And there was Satan, standing at Joshua's right side, ready to accuse him. 2 But the Lord said, “Satan, you are wrong. Jerusalem is my chosen city, and this man was rescued like a stick from a flaming fire.” 3 Joshua's clothes were filthy. 4 So the angel told some of the people to remove Joshua's filthy clothes. Then he said to Joshua, “This means you are forgiven. Now I will dress you in priestly clothes.”

Satan is called the "accuser of our brethren", meaning he constantly tries to bring accusations against God’s people. He seeks to deceive, discourage, and make people feel unworthy of salvation.

Zechariah 3
5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord stood by. 6 And the angel of the Lord protested unto Joshua, saying, 7 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by. 8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch. 9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. 10 In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree. Now I will dress you in priestly clothes.” 5 I spoke up and said, “Also put a clean priestly turban on his head.” Then they dressed him in priestly clothes and put the turban on him, while the Lord's angel stood there watching. 6 After this, the angel encouraged Joshua by telling him that the Lord All-Powerful had promised: 7 If you truly obey me, I will put you in charge of my temple, including the courtyard around it, and you will be allowed to speak at any time with the angels standing beside me. 8 Listen carefully, High Priest Joshua and all of you other priests. You are a sign of things to come, because I am going to bring my servant, the Chosen King. 9 Joshua, I have placed in front of you a stone with seven sides. I will engrave something on that stone, and in a single day I will forgive this guilty country. 10 Then each of you will live at peace and entertain your friends in your own vineyard and under your own fig trees.
gives a vision of Satan accusing Joshua the high priest, but God rebukes Satan and clothes Joshua with clean garments. This reminds us that Jesus intercedes for us, and His grace covers our sins.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that Satan’s goal is to make people believe they are beyond redemption, but Jesus is always ready to forgive and restore.

- Conclusion

Satan tries to condemn us, but Jesus intercedes on our behalf.

He knows his time is short, and he is very angry.”
and Zechariah 3:1-4

Read the following:

2 Corinthians 4:3-4
KJV 3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. CEV 3 If there is anything hidden about our message, it is hidden only to someone who is lost. 4 The god who rules this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers. They cannot see the light, which is the good news about our glorious Christ, who shows what God is like.

John 8:44
KJV 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. CEV 44 Your father is the devil, and you do exactly what he wants. He has always been a murderer and a liar. There is nothing truthful about him. He speaks on his own, and everything he says is a lie. Not only is he a liar himself, but he is also the father of all lies.

The Bible describes how Satan blinds people from the truth. Many reject God not because of logic but because the enemy deceives them. Jesus called Satan the father of lies, meaning his primary weapon is deception.

This is why Jesus came to reveal the truth. He showed the world that God is loving, just, and merciful—the opposite of what Satan claims.

- EGW Notes (Paraphrased)

Ellen White explains that Satan deceives through false teachings, but Jesus came to expose these lies and reveal God’s true character.

- Conclusion

The great controversy is a war between truth and deception. Knowing God’s Word protects us from Satan’s lies.

The Cosmic Conflict

This week’s lesson explored the great controversy between Christ and Satan. Sin began in heaven with Lucifer’s rebellion, but Jesus’ sacrifice guarantees the ultimate victory of good over evil. Though we face trials now, we have hope in Christ’s return, when He will restore all things and end sin forever.
